Tree of
the Month

|
Leyland Cypress takes its name from the
man who discovered it in 1888. Six
seedlings were found growing on an
estate in Wales. They were an
unusual natural cross between trees of
two different genera, Monterey cypress
and Alaska cedar. Rooted cuttings
were introduced to the United States in
1941 and researchers at Clemson
University soon found the tree to have
excellent potential as a southeastern
Christmas tree. Today, this
beautiful hybrid is not only a popular
Christmas tree, but is also noted as a
rapidly-growing hedge, boundary marker,
windbreak and ornamental. |

If not pruned, the upright branches form
a dense, oval- or pyramid-shaped crown
that can reach at least 60 to 70 feet in
height at maturity. Repeated
pruning can be used without harm to
shape this tree into a hedge or to
maintain a shortened height. The
Leyland Cypress does well in full or
partial sun on soil that is well
drained. It tolerates both acidic
and alkaline soil and a wide range of
soil textures. Fastest growth is
in moist, rich soil. The needles
are soft and fine on flattened,
evergreen branches. they are dark
green to bluish-green with age and
maintain good color throughout the
winter. For more information,
